Tom Joad is the protagonist in John Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath". On their difficult journey from Oklahoma to California he continues to fight against injustice and brutality. At the end, he revenges the murder of a friend and has to flee. In the popular culture of the USA, Tom Joad has become "the common man" of the Great Depression. In 1940, after having watched the movie "Grapes of Wrath", folk singer Woody Guthrie wrote a song about him ("The Ballad of Tom Joad"). Springsteen took up the idea in his song.
